Comedy review "Long live Caesar" (Hail, Caesar!)

"Long live Caesar" is a tribute to cinema of the 50s from the Cohens. Like, for example, Martin Scorsese's "Timekeeper" or "Trumbo". The Cohens love movies very much, it's clearly visible in their films. "True Grit" is a masterfully shot action movie, "Miller's Crossroads" is a gorgeous crime drama, "The Big Lebowski" is a wonderful eccentric comedy, etc. Moreover, the genres are completely different, but the production is always at the highest level.

In "Long Live Caesar," the Cohens simultaneously parody the movie business of the fifties and, consequently, the films of those years. A large number of modern movie stars are involved in this action - Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill. Even Dolph Lundgren showed up.

The styling for the 50s is exquisite and beautiful. The sets, costumes, makeup, cars, dance routines, even the smallest details on the set of a movie starring George Clooney. The atmosphere is conveyed just great. Here, the wonderful "Grand Budapest Hotel" by Wes Anderson immediately comes to mind.

"Long live Caesar" was shot with warmth and love for previous productions. The humor here is very gentle, witty and ironic. Although many purely comical things are also present - funny dialogues and situations, a bunch of idiots, I mean communists, one of the participants of which constantly shouts "Shut up" (hello, "Big Lebowski"), we are already familiar with the Capitol Pictures film studio thanks to the tape;Barton Fink" etc.

"Long live Caesar" takes the viewer to a time when the Hollywood system was collapsing before his eyes. Television became a real competitor and gradually began to displace cinema. It is all the more interesting to watch this film nowadays, when we have the opportunity to observe a similar process.

As already mentioned, a whole galaxy of stars is involved in this picture.

Josh Brolin played his role to a solid four, although he didn't show anything special. His character is Eddie Mannix, a man who solves problems. He's been stewing in the juice of filmmaking for years, knows what it takes, how to communicate with actors, journalists, and how to organize the filming process itself.

According to George Clooney himself, Bird Whitlock is a stupid role he had to play in an "idiotic trilogy."&The Cohens. Nevertheless, the character turned out to be very funny. A popular actor, movie star, alcoholic and womanizer who was imbued with the ideas of communism. The last episode with his participation, where he appeared in the face of Jesus Christ, turned out to be very convincing in terms of acting.

Tilda Swinton is a little confused about the dual role of twin competitors Thora and Tessali Saker, who have the same appearance. The biggest difference between them is that one has 19,000,000 and the other has 20,000 readers. And everyone wants to know the truth. With this character(s), the Cohens, in my opinion, overdid it a little.

I liked Scarlett Johansson as a mermaid prima who participates in water procedures. Her DeAnna Moran supports her image on screen in every possible way, but has problems in her personal life that need to be solved behind the scenes. This is where Eddie Mannix comes in handy.

Alden Erenreik as Hobbie Doyle, a cowboy, is also very funny. Devoid of acting talent, the guy is unable to squeeze out even a few simple sentences. The episode in which Ralph Fiennes teaches him to pronounce the phrase "Everything is not so prosaic."" - just brilliant! I've reviewed it twice.

Channing Tatum suddenly liked it. Here, the role simply corresponded to his role - Tatum had already appeared in films several times as a dancer. Plus, his character here is clearly ironic, which made an exceptionally positive impression. Well, the musical number of the sailors with his participation also turned out to be cool.

To summarize. "Long live Caesar" is a film for connoisseurs of cinema and for fans of the work of the Cohen brothers, to whom I belong. To everyone else, this movie may seem like complete nonsense. So keep in mind.

I, on the whole, liked it. I didn't see anything supernatural here, but it was certainly shot and directed great. Ironic, witty, easy and stylish.
